Safety
Last updated: August 28, 2026
Roots helps neighbours find each other, but no app can remove every risk. Use your judgment, protect your personal information and leave any interaction that feels wrong.
Roots is not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency service.
Before you meet
•
Keep early conversations on Roots. In-app messages can be reported; off-app conversations cannot be reviewed by Roots.
•
Do not send money, banking details, identity documents or one-time security codes to someone you met here.
•
Be cautious with unfamiliar links and pressure to move immediately to another app.
•
Tell someone you trust where you are going, who you are meeting and when you expect to return.
When meeting in person
•
Meet in a public, well-lit place with other people around.
•
Arrange your own transportation so you can leave whenever you want.
•
Keep your phone charged and your drink with you.
•
Trust your instincts. You never owe anyone a meeting, an explanation or another chance.
Direct-message report and block
In a direct message, press the shield for Safety tips, Report and Block. In an event chat, the shield opens meetup guidance immediately.
Event chats keep message actions focused on reactions and the shared plan. Use the meetup guidance to keep conversations on Roots and make a safer plan before meeting.
Blocking does not report the person. After a block, you stop seeing each other on the map, in the Inbox, in shared member lists and in shared chat history. You can review or undo blocks later in Settings › Blocked people.
Young people
Roots is for people 18 and over. Report any account you reasonably believe belongs to someone under 18.
Get help
For a safety concern that is not an emergency, report it in Roots or email support@myindianroots.ca. If something happened in person, consider contacting local police or another appropriate local service as well.
